Soil and Light Requirements
Nonstop have fully double flowers that thrive in shady areas. Nonstop is an upright variety that does well in containers, baskets or garden beds. Nonstop Joy has slightly longer peduncles, the flower stock. With this it has a more trailing appearance. Tuberous begonias thrive in well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. It is recommended to use a mixture of peat moss, perlite, and compost to create a well-balanced growing medium. This will provide the necessary nutrients and ensure proper drainage.
When it comes to light, tuberous begonias prefer bright but indirect sunlight. They should be placed in an area where they receive morning sun and afternoon shade. Direct sunlight can scorch the delicate foliage and flowers, so it's important to provide some shade during the hottest part of the day.
Watering and Fertilizing
Proper watering is crucial for the health of tuberous begonias. They require consistent moisture, but overwatering can lead to root rot. It's best to water them when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Avoid getting water on the leaves and flowers, as this can cause fungal diseases.
When it comes to fertilizing, tuberous begonias benefit from a 3-4 month slow release fertilizer or a balanced fertilizer with a ratio of 10-10-10. Apply the fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season to promote healthy growth and abundant blooms. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for application rates.
Temperature and Humidity
Tuberous begonias prefer moderate temperatures between 60-75°F (15-24°C). They are sensitive to frost and should be protected during cold weather. If temperatures are very hot then provide more shade. In cooler weather tuberous begonias can tolerate more sunshine.
