General Information: Ostrich fern like to grow in shade to deep shade adding a luxurious look to shady borders. Their finished height is dependent on conditions. If they receive enough consistent moisture and fertilizer they can become quite large at 5-6 feet tall. Starved for gentle waterings and they will only be 2 feet or less.
The Ostrich Fern multiplies itself in the garden but is not difficult to control. Dig out extra plants to move elsewhere.
Once the plants have become established, shoots in the early spring can be harvested. The small curled up shoots are cut and sauteed in butter. Called "Fiddleheads" they are a delicacy, much to be anticipated as the first spring vegetable.
