Gaura, also known as "Whirling Butterflies," is a beautiful flowering plant that can add elegance and charm to any garden. Although it is a perennial, it is not hardy in Manitoba and so it is grown as an annual here.
1. Planting
Gaura thrives in well-draining soil, so make sure to prepare the planting area by adding organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure or in a container use a good quality soilless mix. Choose a sunny location in your garden that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight per day.
2. Watering
While Gaura is drought-tolerant once established, it is crucial to provide adequate water during its initial growth stages. Water deeply and regularly, especially during dry spells, to help the plant establish a strong root system.
3. Fertilizing
Gaura generally does not require heavy fertilization. However, you can apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring to provide essential nutrients for healthy growth. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application rates
4. Pests and Diseases
Gaura is relatively resistant to pests and diseases. However, keep an eye out for common garden pests like aphids or spider mites. If necessary, treat the infestation with organic insecticidal soap or neem oil.
