General Information:

Wave petunias are a popular choice among gardeners for their vibrant colours and ability to cascade beautifully over hanging baskets, containers, and garden beds. In garden beds, waves spread out to 30-36" and create a wonderful ground cover. Among the various types of petunias, Wave petunias are known for their vigorous growth and ability to withstand harsh weather conditions.

1. Sunlight Requirements:

Wave petunias thrive in full sunlight, requiring at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. This is because sunlight is essential for photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert light energy into chemical energy, enabling them to grow and produce vibrant blooms. In shade waves will be just green and spindly.

2. Soil Preparation:

Before planting Wave petunias in garden beds, it is crucial to prepare the soil properly. These plants prefer well-drained soil with a pH level between 6.0 and 7.0. Adding organic matter, such as compost or peat moss, can improve soil structure and fertility, promoting healthy root development and overall plant growth. In containers or baskets be sure to use a good quality soilless mix.

3. Watering:

Proper watering is essential for the successful growth of Wave petunias. These plants prefer consistently moist soil, but not waterlogged conditions.  As the plants become large sized, the frequency of waterings increases. This is also true for increases in overall temperatures. In the height of a Manitoba summer a large basket may need watering at least every day.

4. Fertilization:

Wave petunias are heavy feeders and benefit from regular fertilization. Use a balanced, 3-4 month slow-release fertilizer incorporated in the soil or a water-soluble fertilizer every week to provide essential nutrients for healthy growth and abundant blooms. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application rates.

6. Pests and Diseases:

While Wave petunias are generally resistant to pests and diseases, they can still be susceptible to common garden pests such as aphids, whiteflies and thrips. Regularly inspect your plants for any signs of infestation and take appropriate measures, such as using organic insecticides. Petunias have a self-preservation mechanism that enables the leaves to become sticky and trap anything that is bothering them like aphids.
